ie8About a year after the launch of the beta release (test version) Microsoft is now launching Internet Explorer 8. This browser allows you to surf more quickly but above all, more safely while maintaining your privacy. Websites built especially for older versions of Internet Explorer need to be adjusted. The new version complies with web standards better.

With a new ‘privacy’ button Microsoft improves the protection of your privacy. One click is enough to prevent that your surfing history and cookies are stored, for example. The new ‘SmartScreen filter’ protects you against misleading and harmful websites while you surf the Net and use e-mail. This keeps your data, privacy and identity safe.

Always informed

‘Web Slices’ allow you to stay informed of the latest news at your favourite website. Websites offering ‘Web Slice’ functions can be added to your tool bar with a single mouse click. You don’t have to surf back to these websites to view the latest news.

mobiWebsites with this extension are built for optimum display on mobile appliances: telephones, smart phones and PDAs. This means that websites with a .mobi domain name have to be fast and user-friendly. In order to ensure that they are, regulations were worked out for the registration and maintenance of a .mobi domain name.

Everyone who builds .mobi websites has to comply with these regulations. Websites that are not in accordance with the regulations can be put ‘on hold’. The administrator of the .mobi domain checks the existing names every three months to verify that they are still in compliance.

Regulations

  • a .mobi website has to be built in XHTML-MP
  • the mobile website must also be reachable without “www…”
  • the use of frames is not allowed

Information

  • dotMobi registrar: general information on .mobi, domain names and regulations
  • dotMobi Switch On! Web Developer Guide
  • Templates: here you can find templates to help you build a static mobile site
  • Test your .mobi site

Why .mobi?

  • Makes your business look innovative
  • There are more mobile phones than computers
  • It allows you to distinguish yourself from your competitors

.mobi domain names are available from 49 Euros (excl. VAT) per year.

Extension e-mail cluster

Last week we extended our e-mail cluster by one extra incoming MX server and one e-mail proxy server. This allows us to guarantee even better e-mail processing.

An incoming MX server is the outer ring of the e-mail cluster. It accepts all incoming connections of new e-mail. As these servers also scan and filter for viruses and spam, redundancy is very important. Several servers allow the stream of incoming e-mail to be distributed. This outer ring currently consists of 11 servers. E-mail proxy servers process all POP3, IMAP, batched SMTP, outgoing SMTP and web mail connections. These are the servers where you log in as a customer to read or send your e-mail. They ‘proxy’ (i.e., pick up and pass on) the connections of your PC and the various e-mail storage servers. These servers, therefore, are also redundant. A total of four servers are used for these communications.

Did you know?

that as of 1 March 2009 you have a total of 2 GiB storage space for your e-mail? Use the slide bar in MyVEVIDA to increase the available storage space per e-mail account.

5 tips for the best Adwords campaign!

adwordsAdwords is Google’s advertising program. You can place a pay-per-click online advertisement. These ads are shown whenever the keywords specified by the advertiser are entered. The advertiser decides the costs per click, and whoever spends the most per click (usually) comes out on top. In addition, the advertiser selects a maximum amount to be spent per day.

  1. Select effective keywords
Although general keywords produce traffic toward your website, they won’t get you many visitors from your target group. Your day budget will be spent very quickly and your campaign statistics will be distorted.
  2. Focus on an area
It is advisable to use geographic names in your search words. You can refine your Google campaign by focusing on a language area, community or country. This will enable you to better reach your target group and to better measure the effect of your campaign.

  3. Quickly get more clicks
If your ad gets more clicks than others it will end up higher in the list of sponsored links. Make your ad as attractive as possible.

  4. Special landing page
Link your ad to a special landing page that is related to the subject instead of just the homepage. It will keep visitors at your website longer.

  5. Analyse your results
Getting results is one thing, but analysing them is just as important! It allows you to constantly adjust your ads and improve your keywords in order to achieve your marketing objectives more quickly.

Good luck!
