Secure emailing via your website

December 14th, 2009

There is a very simple technology that allows visitors to your website to email you via your website, for instance to place an order, ask a question or to keep you updated. However, sending emails via the standard webserver SMTP service (’localhost’) is not always secure:

  1. Forms or scripts may be misused on a large scale;
  2. You, or the sender, may see an “odd” sender address in the email message (”recycler@vevida.com” is the standard sender address for a webserver) - also if the sender completes the email address as [From:];
  3. Email may be processed late, for instance if there are long queues on the webserver (due to a defect script or misuse);
  4. Sent data (including privacy sensitive information!) is sent to the SMTP service as a legible text;
  5. Email may be marked as spam due to misuse or the standard return address.

Secure emailing

Sending emails via our SMTP server ’smtp.vevida.com’ is secure, on the following two conditions:

  1. Email must be sent by TLS encryption;
  2. A valid email account hosted by VEVIDA and not forwarded must be used to log in on the SMTP server (’authenticated SMTP’).

This ensures that the correct email address is included in the email message as the sender address. Moreover, sending the SMTP transaction via the TLS encryption protocol is secure and often faster, as it bypasses the ‘localhost’ of the webserver which can be slow.

Sample scripts

The script languages ASP.NET 2.0/3.5, (classic) ASP and PHP currently offer support for ‘authenticated SMTP over TLS’. Visit our Service pages for sample scripts that you can adapt to your needs:

  1. ASP.NET 2.0/3.5 (System.Net.Mail)
  2. Classic ASP (CDOSYS)
  3. PHP (PEAR Mail)
  4. PHP (PHPMailer)

Many content management systems (CMS, such as Wordpress or Joomla, e107) and webstores (such as Zen Cart, osCommerce, VirtueMart) come with standard support.

To activate it instantly, you can often simply complete the requested data (SMTP server, email address/log-in name, password and security set-up) in the admin environment. Some PHP packages require you to install a new version of  PHPMailer which is available for downloading from the Service Page.

Also in Outlook and Thunderbird

Did you know that you can also read your IMAP email safely in Outlook, Thunderbird and other email programs? On the account set-up page enable the TLS option to receive (IMAP) and send (SMTP) emails. This will keep your login data safe from interception by third parties.

Registration of .eu domains with non-Roman characters (IDNs)

November 29th, 2009

euOn 1 December, VEVIDA will start accepting advance registrations of the new .eu domains with non-Roman characters (IDNs). This will give you a better chance to secure your IDN soon.

From 10 December, EURid, the organisation responsible for .EU domains, will support so-called IDNs - ‘internationalised domain names’. These are domain names containing characters outside the standard Western character set. Examples: Swedish å, German ü, Romanian ş and letters from the Bulgarian and Greek alphabets.

IDN advance registration from 1 December at VEVIDA

There is no ’sunrise period’ for this introduction, where owners of particular rights (trademarks, etc.) are given precedence. It’s first come, first served. As an extra service, you can register your IDN domain with VEVIDA from 1 December. You follow the usual order and payment procedures to do this. Then, on 10 December, we file your IDN immediately after the new .eu registration system is up and running. Because it is technically possible for someone else to get in a fraction earlier, we can’t give you a 100% guarantee, but the chance of them getting in first with your IDN is virtually nil.

Additional information

You can order an IDN at vevida.com from 1 December. When we check the availability of an IDN, we also check whether your domain meets the preconditions for an IDN. The most important are:

  • The domain uses only characters from the same character set (so not, for example, a combination of Latin, Greek and Cyrillic characters);
  • The domain cannot begin with xn--;
  • Not all characters are supported. German ß, for example, is not supported. See the list of supported characters for an overview.
  • A domain cannot be longer than 63 characters after conversion to an ACE string.

An ACE string is what you get when the IDN you enter in the address line of your browser is converted to a form that the domain name system (DNS) understands. For example: the ACE string for the domain name ‘münchen.eu’ is ‘xn--mnchen-3ya’.

Because the IDN registration system will not be online during the advance registration period (1-10 December 2009), every entered and correct IDN domain will be available for registration. Whether that really is the case will, of course, only be clear on 10 December after official registration opens. If the domain name you submit has already been registered by another person, VEVIDA Customer Service will contact you to discuss further options.

Technical limitations:                http://www.eurid.eu/en/eu-domain-names/technical-limitations

FAQs:                                     http://www.eurid.eu/en/faq#IDN

As you can see, there are lots of rules for an IDN. It is also possible for an IDN ordered online at vevida.com to be accepted but later to be refused by EURid. We therefore ask for your understanding and cannot accept responsibility for this. If VEVIDA can ultimately not register your IDN, you will, of course, get your money back.

VEVIDA has extensive and in-depth knowledge of Microsoft products. The Gold certification underlines that. Partners at this level can establish a very strong relationship with Microsoft and have a personal account manager at Microsoft. This gives VEVIDA access to resources and support so we can serve you even better when it comes to integration and support of various Microsoft products.
